This was our fourth PCS, and the first one out of Alaska. The government move covered our household goods through the transportation office, and the packers showed up when they said they would. That part I'd done before.
The lessons were in what the government move doesn't cover: the second car, the dog, the timing with school enrollment and the weight limit. We were over, as most families with kids and a garage are.
We did a partial personally procured move for the extra weight — rented a trailer, got weigh tickets, kept every receipt — and were reimbursed. The paperwork is not hard, but it is unforgiving if you start late.
Our second vehicle shipped commercially from Anchorage, since only one is typically covered. The dog flew in the cabin with me, with a connection in the Lower 48. She did better than I did.
What caught me off guard was school. Our new district wanted printed school records and immunization records on day one, and I'd assumed I could request them later. Getting records from Alaska while sitting in Texas took far longer than it should have.
Four moves in, this was the smoothest — because I finally made lists for the things nobody hands you a form for.
